Engage Your Orthopedic Surgeons in CDI: New CMS Initiative Links Quality Outcomes to Hospital and Physician Reimbursement Presented by Shannon Newell, RHIA, CCS and George Wood, M.D.

Approximately 800 hospitals across the country that perform inpatient total hip and knee joint replacements will be required to participate in the latest value-based payment initiative launched by CMS, which became effective January 1, 2016. This session will review key concepts and case studies to illustrate documentation and code assignment challenges that impact claims-based quality measure performance such as replacement vs. revision, complications, and the capture of chronic conditions pertinent to risk adjustment.

This panel presentation will explore the charged topic of how to best communicate with and educate your medical staff regarding coding and documentation in ICD-10. With the increased clinical specificity that ICD-10 necessitates, especially with procedures, the physician communication process requires review and improvement. The panelists include practicing specialty physicians representing several specialties, including cardiothoracic surgery, general surgery, orthopedics, and internal medicine.
